Former Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, recently praised President Bola Tinubu for his courageous decision to pursue the creation of state police forces. Okowa views this initiative as a vital move to combat Nigeria’s ongoing security struggles and enhance the decentralization of authority to individual states. During the All Progressives Congress (APC) Delta North Stakeholders’ gathering in Asaba, Okowa noted that the push for state-level policing began over two decades ago, yet previous leaders lacked the resolve to implement it.
Okowa clarified that state police forces would work alongside the federal police rather than eliminating them. He emphasized the necessity of having locally dedicated, well-trained, and adequately equipped officers to protect citizens effectively. According to him, national progress requires leaders who prioritize public safety over political convenience. During the same event, party stakeholders formally pledged their support for President Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for the 2027 election cycle.
Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme reinforced this support for state police, pointing out the limitations of a singular federal force in reaching all regions of the country. He also appealed for party unity, encouraging members to reconcile with those who lost primary elections to ensure a cohesive front for future contests. Party leaders, including Chief Solomon Areyenka and Dan Ossai, echoed the call for diligent preparation and solidarity to secure victory in 2027.
