The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnic and Higher Technical Education has ordered the Federal Ministry of Education to hand over all documentation concerning the government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) initiative by August 18, 2026. Furthermore, the committee has mandated the Minister of Education to attend a hearing in person on September 17, 2026, to account for the program’s progress.
This decision followed an investigative session at the National Assembly, where lawmakers voiced frustration over the minister’s repeated failure to attend previous hearings or send an official representative. Committee Chairman Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda noted that the panel has been seeking data on the TVET scheme since January 30, 2025, without success. The most recent request, sent on July 30, 2026, was also ignored.
Laguda emphasized that Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution grant the National Assembly authority to oversee the actions of government agencies. While some committee members, including Hon. Rabiu Yusuf and Hon. Bayo Adepoju, condemned the minister’s absence as a sign of disrespect and proposed a vote of no confidence, others argued for a final chance. Hon. Paul Kalejaiye suggested providing one last ultimatum to allow for a formal response.
The committee ultimately decided to wait until the new deadline before escalating the situation. Laguda expressed hope that the minister would comply, noting that the requested records are essential for verifying the proper use of public funds allocated to technical education.
