Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has reiterated his administration’s demand for a 13 percent derivation from the federal government. He argues this is necessary to address the significant environmental and economic damage caused by recurring floods linked to the Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro, and Zungeru hydropower dams.
During a meeting with the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) leadership, led by Chairman Cosmas Akighir, the Governor pressed for urgent intervention in regional security, communal strife, and climate instability. Bago emphasized that constant water releases from these dams destroy property and displace residents, underscoring the need for financial support. He also stressed the importance of resolving farmer-herder conflicts that plague the North-Central zone.
Governor Bago proposed a collaborative forum between regional governors and the NCDC to harmonize development efforts and address specific regional needs. Furthermore, he urged the commission to prioritize investments in education and agriculture. The state government has pledged logistical support, including a liaison office, to assist the commission’s operations.
Cyril Tsenyil, Managing Director of the NCDC, affirmed the commission’s dedication to sustainable development across several sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, and telecommunications. Chairman Akighir noted that the commission is touring member states to build partnerships and praised the Governor’s recent work in local agricultural and infrastructure projects.
