Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intends to block state government bank accounts leading up to the August 15 governorship vote. Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, announced this in a Wednesday statement.
Governor Adeleke voiced these concerns during a meeting in Osogbo, asserting that the anti-graft agency also targets accounts belonging to key government staff. The governor labeled these potential actions as blatant lawlessness, arguing that such measures would cripple state operations right before the election. He further contended that the EFCC lacks the legal authority to seize state government funds.
As of now, the EFCC has not provided a comment regarding these claims. Adeleke is campaigning for re-election under the Accord Party banner, facing a challenge from the All Progressives Congress. Rising political volatility has resulted in recent clashes between opposing supporters. Consequently, the governor has urged President Bola Tinubu to step in and prevent further violence, drawing parallels to the instability in the South-West during 1983. Adeleke emphasized that his request to the President is aimed solely at ensuring the upcoming election proceeds in a transparent and peaceful manner.
