Gombe State Police Command recently detained 44 people suspected of criminal activity during targeted sweeps throughout the Gombe metropolitan area. These efforts were initiated to combat escalating issues related to thuggery, substance abuse, and other violent offenses within the state.
Commissioner of Police Umar Chuso discussed these measures during a Wednesday press conference, labeling the raids a core component of their ongoing crime prevention strategy. He additionally introduced the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), an educational outreach program designed to inform citizens—specifically youth—about the risks associated with cult activities and narcotics.
The commissioner noted that this program aligns with the Inspector-General of Police’s broader strategy to enhance community-focused and intelligence-driven law enforcement. The campaign will concentrate on reaching school environments and local neighborhoods to foster better behavior and lower crime rates.
The primary operation occurred on Tuesday evening as security teams struck various known criminal hubs. Chuso confirmed that officers recovered offensive weaponry and substances like Indian hemp from the detainees. He emphasized that investigations are currently moving forward, and any individuals found culpable will face prosecution. Furthermore, the commissioner urged the public to assist law enforcement by sharing relevant information promptly to help strengthen communal safety.
