Global oil prices drop almost 5% following news of upcoming Iran negotiations

Oil prices plummeted nearly 5% as President Donald Trump announced new diplomatic efforts with Iran to de-escalate the regional conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Oil markets experienced a significant decline during early Asian trading on Monday. This shift followed President Donald Trump’s announcement regarding upcoming discussions with Iran aimed at resolving the Middle East conflict and restoring access to the Strait of Hormuz.

The current hostilities, which escalated in late February after a joint US and Israeli military offensive against Iran, have introduced intense volatility into the energy sector. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely restricted a critical corridor for international petroleum distribution.

By 2250 GMT on Sunday, Brent North Sea crude for September delivery had shed 4.69 percent, reaching $83.81 per barrel. Similarly, the US-based West Texas Intermediate contract decreased by 4.67 percent to settle at $80.72.

President Trump confirmed on Sunday that diplomatic engagement with Iran would commence on Monday. He indicated that the decision to pause major military operations was made to prioritize a potential settlement. While he did not specify the location or the specific parties involved, Trump stated that the negotiation process would start the following afternoon. In a parallel development, Iranian officials noted that they are close to reaching an agreement with Oman regarding an alternative passage through the strait.
