The National Sports Commission (NSC) has increased performance incentives and immediate cash rewards for Nigerian competitors participating in the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland. Chairman Shehu Dikko stated that this updated structure is intended to bolster the morale of Team Nigeria.
Under the revised plan, gold medal winners receive $10,000, with $5,000 provided as an immediate cash payment and the remaining $5,000 deposited into their accounts. Silver medalists are awarded $5,000, split into $2,000 in immediate cash and $3,000 via bank transfer. Bronze medalists receive a total of $3,000, consisting of $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in their accounts.
Dikko confirmed that the three gold medalists from Friday have been paid their $10,000 rewards, clarifying that the amount is higher than previous reports suggested. Additionally, Saturday’s gold and silver medalists have already collected their respective $5,000 and $2,000 cash portions. Coaches are also included in the scheme, earning $5,000 for every gold medal secured by their athletes.
Daily stipends have been set at $200 for athletes and $250 for coaching staff. Beyond standard prizes, Dikko noted that special, situational bonuses are available, referencing the mid-competition incentive provided to Rilwan Idris to boost his performance. The commission stated these enhancements are central to their strategy for supporting the team throughout the event.
