Gianni Infantino Champions FIFA Commercial Plan Despite Global Backlash

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended a controversial proposal to commercialize World Cup assets, framing the plan as a voluntary opportunity to boost global football development.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently addressed the controversy surrounding a plan to launch a private commercial subsidiary, describing the initiative as a voluntary prospect rather than a mandatory shift. The proposal, which suggests selling ownership stakes in FIFA tournaments, drew significant criticism upon its announcement earlier this week. Infantino countered this negativity, arguing that the strategy aims to better distribute football’s financial gains to regions that require the most support.

Known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise, or FFE, the project is currently in the consultation phase. Infantino emphasized that it remains an offer subject to a democratic vote by the 211 member associations and must gain approval from the FIFA council. He explained that capturing untapped commercial potential requires specific expertise separate from the standard governance of the sport.

By centralizing sponsorship, licensing, and broadcast rights under this new structure, Infantino believes the organization can provide greater resources to its member nations. He maintains that the core of the sport will remain untouched and that global fans will eventually benefit from the increased investment in their local football infrastructure.
