Ghana Secures Victory Over Cape Verde in WAFCON Opener

Ghana defeated WAFCON debutants Cape Verde 2-0 in their Group D opener, with Doris Boaduwaa scoring and an own goal sealing the result.

Ghana achieved a 2-0 victory against Cape Verde in their Group D match held in Casablanca, Morocco, on Wednesday. This result contrasted with the performance of fellow tournament newcomers Malawi, who recently pulled off a surprise win against Nigeria. Entering the match as significant underdogs with a lower world ranking, Cape Verde aimed to mirror the success of their men’s team’s recent international displays but fell behind early.

Doris Boaduwaa opened the scoring for Ghana just seven minutes into the match, capitalizing on a long ball from Portia Boakye. The lead extended to 2-0 in the 54th minute when Eleia Vieira inadvertently scored an own goal following a cross. While Cape Verde goalkeeper Jacinta Rodrigues made several critical saves to prevent a larger margin of defeat, Ghana remained the dominant side throughout the encounter. Ivania Moreira provided a late threat for Cape Verde with a long-range effort that goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan successfully defended. The match concluded with Cape Verde playing with 10 women after a VAR review resulted in a straight red card for Kleydiana Borges deep into stoppage time.
