Retired Major General John Enenche, the former Director of Defence Information, has urged the Federal Government to increase the compensation package for military personnel. During a recent appearance on Arise Television, Enenche stated that the monthly earnings for the lowest-ranking soldiers should be at least N250,000.
He characterized this figure as a reasonable baseline given the current economic climate and the escalating cost of living. Enenche emphasized that members of the armed forces are unique compared to other government employees because of the personal sacrifices they make. He pointed out that soldiers are perpetually on call, a commitment that persists even after they have finished their active service.
To illustrate his point, the retired general noted that he is still expected to serve the military when contacted by senior officials, highlighting that the sense of duty remains constant long after an individual has officially retired.
