Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), has urged all Nigerians to collaborate with security forces and the government to combat the country’s escalating insecurity. Marking his 84th birthday, the former leader emphasized that the responsibility for restoring national stability rests with every citizen, not just state agencies.
Abubakar highlighted the death of Major General Abubakar Rabe (retd.) as a grim reminder of the urgent need for collective action. Drawing from his extensive military background, including service during the Nigerian Civil War, he noted that while security agencies are dedicated to the fight against terrorism, their efforts are hampered by the politicization of security matters.
The former Head of State warned that divisive rhetoric, selfish political interests, and the proliferation of fake news on social media serve to embolden criminal groups. He urged Nigerians to transcend ethnic, religious, and political divides, arguing that criminals do not distinguish between these identities when inflicting violence.
Finally, he called on authorities to maintain decisive action against threats and encouraged security personnel to remain steadfast in their duties. He expressed a personal vision of a peaceful, prosperous Nigeria for future generations, while pleading with citizens to remain vigilant and support the families of victims who have perished in the line of duty.
