Former National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, has publicly criticized the idea of negotiating with bandits, arguing that such actions are ineffective and harmful. He warned that engaging in dialogue with criminals only provides them with funds, which ultimately strengthens their ability to commit further acts of violence.
Ganduje issued these comments during a Tuesday press briefing. He was reacting to statements made by Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the NDC, who suggested that he and presidential candidate Peter Obi would pursue talks with terrorists if they win the 2027 election.
Highlighting the importance of established security forces, including the military and police, Ganduje stated that the current strategy of seeking peace through negotiations with illegal armed groups has failed. He pointed out that providing criminals with money, transportation, and supplies to facilitate these talks only creates an environment where they can flourish. Ultimately, Ganduje argued that these payoffs enable bandits to kidnap victims, amass wealth, and purchase more weapons, creating a cycle that poses a direct threat to national stability.
