Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, recently emphasized the necessity of ongoing funding for disease tracking, medical facilities, and emergency readiness. Speaking at the Nigerian Medical Association’s annual conference, she highlighted that past crises like COVID-19 and the 2014 Ebola epidemic reveal a clear need for innovation and sector-wide cooperation. Sanwo-Olu noted that physicians act as the primary defense in national crises and deserve better resources, improved working conditions, and professional growth opportunities.
Dr. Jide Idris, the Director-General of the NCDC, warned that Nigeria remains at risk due to global travel and active outbreaks elsewhere. Represented by Dr. Olukitan Jinadu, he stressed that while the government has bolstered surveillance and laboratory capacity, the ultimate protection depends on the vigilance of individual doctors. He urged medical professionals to stop assuming every fever is simply malaria, as early detection of Ebola symptoms—such as vomiting or headaches—is vital to halting transmission.
Prof. Akin Osibogun, who chaired the event, praised Nigeria’s rapid 2014 containment efforts as a blueprint for the future. He noted that success hinges on consistent investment in health systems rather than chance. Dr. Babajide Saheed, the Lagos NMA chairman, agreed, stating that national security against disease relies on a combination of strong border controls, improved lab testing, and cohesive governance. All speakers reiterated that while the government holds a responsibility to lead, every clinical encounter serves as a critical chance to detect and stop potential outbreaks before they escalate.
