Former England Forward Jay Bothroyd Claims Cristiano Ronaldo Will Never Reach Lionel Messi’s Level

Jay Bothroyd argues that Cristiano Ronaldo should accept a bench role for Portugal, asserting the forward will never match Lionel Messi’s legacy.

Retired England star Jay Bothroyd has publicly stated that Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo will never achieve the same status as Argentine leader Lionel Messi. Bothroyd suggests that the 41-year-old Al-Nassr attacker should transition into a substitute role for the Portugal national team, arguing that he can no longer perform at the level of his long-time rival.

During an appearance on Sky Sports, Bothroyd questioned Ronaldo’s selfless approach to the game. He remarked that while he respects the maximum effort Ronaldo has invested into his professional career, the forward appears primarily driven by a desire to match Messi, a goal the analyst believes is unattainable. Bothroyd noted that while dedicated fans might disagree, the player’s focus seems centered on his own achievements rather than the team’s broader objectives.
