Ifeanyi Nworie, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman in Ebonyi State, has accused the State Police Command of failing to protect opposition members during a recent violent incident. Nworie, who previously defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after the 2023 elections but has since returned to the PDP, claims he and his supporters were ambushed by approximately 50 thugs in Ikwuator village, Idemba community.
The incident occurred during a rally marking his return to the PDP. Nworie alleged that the attackers destroyed property, including chairs and canopies, and injured at least 10 party members as well as members of the press. He stated that local police officers were present during the disruption but stood by without intervening, despite his claims that he had formally requested security prior to the event.
In support of his claim, Nworie provided a copy of a letter dated July 31, 2026, which he asserted was sent to the police to request protection due to prior threats. Conversely, the Ebonyi State Police Command, through spokesperson SP Joshua Ukandu, denied receipt of any such document or petition regarding the rally.
The APC leadership in Ebonyi has distanced itself from the violence. Stanley Okoro Emegha, the state APC chairman, rejected the accusations, suggesting that the attack was likely orchestrated by individuals unhappy with Nworie’s political shifts rather than by the party itself. He maintained that the APC remains committed to peaceful conduct in line with the governor’s directives.
