The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has officially announced it will no longer back Gianni Infantino in his campaign for another term as FIFA president. This move follows a widespread international outcry regarding a now-discarded proposal from Infantino to introduce private investment into the World Cup.
In a formal statement, the FAW cited significant concerns regarding leadership and decision-making. The organization noted failures in governance, communication, and overall values, asserting that Infantino had lost their trust. The association emphasized that prioritizing the health of the sport is essential and that the current situation was deemed unacceptable.
While Infantino recently abandoned the controversial investment plan, the damage to his support base appears to be growing. This shift in stance from Wales comes as UEFA has also publicly questioned his leadership. The upcoming FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in Rabat this March, covering the 2027–2031 cycle.
