First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has contributed N2 billion to the Abia State government, aiming to advance the production of the renowned Akwete textile. Announced during her recent trip to Aba, the funds are intended to upgrade the local production facility, foster employment opportunities, and strengthen the regional economy.
Mrs. Tinubu highlighted the historical importance of the craft, which utilizes vertical looms to create intricate patterns from cotton, silk, and raffia. She emphasized the necessity of preserving this cultural legacy, urging the youth to take pride in traditional African attire. The First Lady expressed her commitment to elevating Akwete fabrics to a national platform and pledged to wear the textile during the next presidential inauguration should her husband, President Bola Tinubu, secure a second term.
Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Priscilla, welcomed the donation, noting its potential to modernize the industry. The state government is currently working to eliminate operational obstacles and integrate technology to enhance the global competitiveness of these traditional textiles. Governor Otti also acknowledged the federal government’s ongoing economic reforms.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe joined in celebrating the female weavers, describing them as the foundation of the community. In recognition of her support, the Abia Council of Traditional Rulers bestowed upon the First Lady the title of Ugo Nwanyi Abia, signifying her as the pride of the state’s women.
