Filip Nowacki has cemented his status as Jersey’s most accomplished Commonwealth Games athlete after clinching gold in the 200m breaststroke. At just 18 years old, the swimmer is only the second individual from the island to achieve a gold medal at the Games.
Nowacki, who recently claimed silver in the 100m breaststroke, led his latest race from start to finish. He secured the victory with a time of 2:07.87, finishing ahead of Canada’s Oliver Dawson and Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook. This accomplishment marks Jersey’s first gold since Colin Mallett’s fullbore shooting success in 1990.
As a British senior and world junior champion, Nowacki is already being compared to prominent figures in the sport, having competed closely with Adam Ramsay-Peaty. The young athlete, who is part of the Team GB development program, has his sights set on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Given his early success, many anticipate he will become the most decorated athlete in Jersey’s Commonwealth history.
