Fifty women have shared accounts of being forced or manipulated by partners into participating in swinging. This surge in reports followed a BBC News investigation featuring a woman who described being pressured into sexual encounters with over 100 strangers. Many women expressed that they engaged in these activities against their own wishes to appease their partners or avoid hostile reactions.
Several participants highlighted how they faced verbal abuse, threats, and emotional manipulation to ensure their compliance. Most of these encounters were organized through the website FabSwingers, which reportedly hosts over half a million active accounts in the UK. Allegations surfaced regarding rape, non-consensual sharing of intimate photographs, and other severe forms of exploitation. Some victims argue that the platform facilitates such abuse and fails to implement effective safety measures.
While FabSwingers maintains that it is not liable for private conduct between adults and claims to have moderation procedures, experts and figures like Labour MP Jess Phillips have called for stricter oversight. Phillips argues that the term swinging is often used to mask sexual exploitation and silence victims. She suggests that authorities must recognize the pressure to participate in such activities as a form of domestic abuse.
The investigative findings indicate that many women only realized their experiences constituted abuse after hearing similar stories from others. The reports have raised significant questions about consent and the responsibility of online platforms under the Online Safety Act. While the platform claims to prioritize reports of abuse, critics and former moderators have expressed skepticism regarding the efficacy of its safety policies and training.
