Federal Government Authorizes Updated Service Scheme for NiMet

The Nigerian government has approved a revised Scheme of Service for NiMet to enhance career progression, staff welfare, and the agency’s meteorological service delivery.

The Nigerian government has officially sanctioned a revised Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). This update aims to bolster the organization’s professional structure, improve employee welfare, and sharpen its ability to carry out vital weather-related duties. Prof. Charles Anosike, the Director-General of NiMet, received formal notification of this approval via a letter dated July 9, 2026, issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

This initiative follows detailed field research and adherence to standard regulatory procedures. By updating these guidelines, the government seeks to modernize NiMet’s internal policies, bridge existing professional gaps, and support better career advancement for its workforce. The new framework introduces specific Junior, Intermediate, and Professional cadre categories, aligning the agency with broader federal public service standards while respecting its unique operational requirements.

Under the new mandates, NiMet must strictly follow established rules regarding promotions, appointments, and personnel changes. Specifically, staff in lower tiers must meet educational requirements, such as obtaining a bachelor’s degree, before they can advance beyond current grade levels. This decision complements the updated salary scale and improved working conditions that were implemented for NiMet personnel earlier in June 2026. Ultimately, these structural changes are intended to help the agency provide more reliable climate and weather intelligence to essential sectors like aviation, agriculture, maritime affairs, and disaster management.
