Multiple vehicle collisions on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted in one fatality and two injuries early Friday. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have advised drivers to seek alternate routes as recovery operations cause significant congestion.
The initial accident happened at 12:05 a.m. on the road heading toward Ibadan, involving five heavy trucks and a Toyota Sienna. Officials identified speeding and a loss of control as the primary factors. Out of seven men involved, one died, one was hurt, and five were unharmed. The deceased remained trapped beneath a truck, requiring specialized machinery for removal.
A second incident occurred at 3:15 a.m. on the side heading into Lagos, where a Mazda commercial bus crashed due to brake failure. The driver was severely injured and transported to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre. Emergency crews are currently working to clear the site.
FRSC Sector Commander Kehinde Hamzat and LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the victims’ families. Authorities suggest using the Ikorodu-Sagamu route for outbound travel and the Lekki-Epe Expressway for inbound traffic. Officials reminded motorists to verify the mechanical state of their vehicles—specifically brakes—before travel and cautioned against the risks associated with night driving, such as limited visibility and fatigue.
