Despite a surprising 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening match of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Nigerian football fans remain optimistic about the Super Falcons’ chances. Supporters interviewed in Keffi, Nasarawa State, voiced their belief that the team can bounce back and successfully defend the title they secured in 2025.
Muhammad Auwall noted that while the initial result was unexpected, he believes the team will advance from Group C. He emphasized that the Falcons remain a formidable squad capable of going deep into the tournament. Echoing this sentiment, Isaac Ngbede observed that the Malawian side appeared quicker on the pitch, but he expects the Nigerian team to display more aggression in their upcoming games. Ngbede predicted that the team would likely win their remaining group matches.
Anike Oye highlighted the importance of the tournament, as the top four finishers earn spots in the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. She described the loss as a wake-up call, noting that opponents are becoming increasingly competitive. Given the experience of the squad led by captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Oye encouraged fans not to panic, stating that the team has previously overcome similar challenges.
