The public standoff between social media figure Martins Vincent Otse, commonly known as VDM, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police Moshood Jimoh has become a focal point for assessing the accountability of the Nigeria Police Force. While the situation is often portrayed as a personal conflict, it highlights significant questions regarding the integrity of criminal investigations.
The controversy stems from the investigation into the 2023 death of Sheriff Salami and the 2024 killing of Prince Ademola Akinloye in the Ajiran district of Lagos. VDM has publicly claimed that businessman Ahmed Akanbi was unjustly implicated due to coerced testimonies and has alleged that suspects were subjected to torture. He is currently refusing to travel to Lagos to answer police summons, citing fears for his safety and the alleged bias of AIG Jimoh, and has requested that the case be moved to Abuja.
The Nigeria Police Force has responded by bifurcating the criminal proceedings from the administrative inquiry. CSP Ani Iniedu, speaking for the Force, noted that the murder case is already under judicial review following legal guidance from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions. Consequently, the police have stated that the matter is sub judice and will not be litigated through media platforms.
Simultaneously, the Force has initiated an administrative review, inviting AIG Jimoh to respond to the accusations. Additionally, the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja has requested VDM’s presence to provide evidence supporting his claims. The police emphasized that these measures demonstrate their commitment to holding officers accountable regardless of seniority. Ultimately, this situation underscores the tension between digital advocacy and established legal processes in the pursuit of justice.
