Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) has identified national transmission upgrades and frequent underground cable vandalism as the primary drivers behind the extended power shortages in FESTAC Town, Amuwo Odofin, and nearby areas. Abiola Aloba, the company’s General Manager of Corporate Communications, stated that these infrastructure improvements, paired with criminal damage to network equipment, have significantly hindered service delivery.
The FESTAC region suffers from the highest rate of underground cable theft within the entire EKEDP network. To combat these issues, the utility company has finished building the FESTAC 3 feeder, which draws power from the Ojo Transmission Station to act as a secondary supply source. Final activation for this project is currently pending load-balancing and official TCN clearance. Furthermore, engineers have managed to partially restore power on the FESTAC 1 33kV line by isolating damaged cable sections, with ongoing efforts to resolve remaining faults.
EKEDP reports that it has committed substantial financial resources to enhance the local electrical grid. Regarding security, the firm has sought assistance from the Lagos State Police Command, resulting in several arrests related to the vandalism. Aloba urged residents to remain patient and maintain peaceful communication as the company continues to collaborate with local stakeholders and community leaders to finalize repairs and stabilize electricity supply.
