Eight Niger State Revenue Officials Apprehended for Alleged Financial Misconduct

Police have arrested eight Niger State Internal Revenue Service employees accused of diverting billions of naira in state revenue, with investigations currently ongoing.

Law enforcement officers have taken eight employees from the Niger State Internal Revenue Service into custody following accusations involving the diversion of billions of naira in state funds. The detainees are presently held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, where officials are reviewing financial documents and questioning the suspects to gauge the scope of the suspected embezzlement.

Reports indicate that the illicit activity may have spanned several years, with investigators looking into the potential involvement of additional staff members. Allegations suggest that high-ranking personnel might have profited from this scheme, as some suspects reportedly possess expensive vehicles and various real estate assets inside and outside the region.

Authorities have requested that the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Minna extend the detention period for the group to ensure sufficient time for a thorough investigation before formal charges are filed. Once the inquiry concludes, the individuals will face court proceedings. Currently, both the Niger State Police Command and the state revenue service have remained silent regarding the situation as the government works to enhance fiscal oversight.
