Mr. Collins Agbo, Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), has promised that the local government elections scheduled for August 22, 2026, will be conducted with transparency and integrity. During a stakeholders’ meeting in Abakaliki, Agbo urged political participants to work alongside the commission to foster a peaceful process. He praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for ensuring the commission maintains the independence required to fulfill its duties.
Operational details were outlined by commission members. Mr. Hyacinth Nwoba, Commissioner for Logistics and Field Operations, confirmed that all materials for the 171 wards and 2,947 polling units across 13 local government areas are ready for distribution. Meanwhile, Barrister Sunday Odunwa, Commissioner for Legal and Security, issued a stern warning against electoral violence and intimidation, noting that campaigning in party attire is illegal 24 hours prior to voting. He emphasized that offenders will face prosecution.
Administrative officials, including Mr. Irem Okechukwu and Dr. Emmanuel Ibiam, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to neutrality and the provision of necessary resources. Mr. Nwanja Uchenna added that staff will be stationed at all polling sites by 7:00 a.m. to facilitate voter access. Representatives from the ADC and the disability community, specifically Dr. Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor and Comrade Friday Nwovu, called for rapid result announcements and inclusive participation to ensure the election is accessible to all residents.
