The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo and the Benue State Police Command are offering different accounts regarding the disappearance of Kelvin Ochai, a seminarian residing at the home of Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi. The Diocese asserts that Ochai was kidnapped on Wednesday night from the Bishop’s residence located in Asa III, Otukpo. Conversely, local police are treating the matter as a missing person investigation.
Rev. Joseph Itodo, the Diocesan Chancellor, reported on Friday that they have received no contact from any abductors. He noted that Bishop Apochi is deeply distressed and has requested prayers for Ochai’s safe return. The church continues to work toward securing his freedom.
The police perspective differs significantly. Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Peter Aondona, stated that there is no evidence currently supporting the kidnapping claim. According to Aondona, reports indicate that Ochai went to bathe at a location away from his living quarters and subsequently vanished. Aondona further dismissed reports of a prior kidnapping attempt at the residence two weeks ago, noting that no such incident was ever officially reported to law enforcement. Authorities confirm that an active investigation is ongoing to uncover the facts.
