President Bola Tinubu, joined by governors, former leaders, and government officials, gathered in Abuja to commemorate the first anniversary of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s passing. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu praised the late leader, stating that Buhari dedicated himself fully to the nation without hesitation. Shettima noted that Buhari’s impact on Nigeria remains indelible, describing his service as defined by profound courage and selfless patriotism.
Reflecting on their personal connection, Shettima recounted being tasked by Tinubu to support the late president during his illness and later facilitating the return of his remains to Nigeria. He emphasized that the bond between them proved to be a testament to true friendship during and after their time in office.
Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, highlighted the symbiotic political relationship between Buhari and Tinubu, noting their mutual support in securing the presidency. Gowon also shared a personal anecdote regarding Buhari’s character, revealing how the late president once provided financial aid for his children’s education while he was living abroad. He refuted claims that Buhari’s leadership favored only the northern region, insisting his compassion extended to all citizens.
Other speakers, including Senator Atiku Bagudu and representatives from Katsina State, celebrated Buhari’s integrity and his commitment to infrastructure, security, and agricultural reforms. The event also served as the official announcement for the future Muhammadu Buhari Foundation and Centre, which aims to preserve his historical legacy. Notable attendees included former First Lady Aisha Buhari, various state governors, and traditional rulers, with a scheduled video tribute from former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo being omitted due to technical issues.
