General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), the Minister of Defence, has declared his intention to launch a South-East Regional Basketball Championship. This project is designed to identify and support young athletic talent throughout the region.
The announcement followed the minister’s visit to the Umuahia Township Stadium at the conclusion of his three-day trip to Abia State. A statement released on Saturday by his media aide, Leah Katung-Babatunde, confirmed he met with youths attending a multi-age basketball camp hosted by the Crossover Foundation, which was founded by basketball stars, the Achiuwa brothers, and members of the Nigerian diaspora.
As a dedicated basketball fan, the minister praised the foundation and the Abia State government for their joint efforts in promoting youth sports. He pledged N2 million to aid the camp’s ongoing operations. According to General Musa, the upcoming regional tournament will serve as a venue for athletes from all five South-East states to compete and demonstrate their skills.
During his address, he encouraged parents to foster sports participation among their children, highlighting that athletics contribute to personal character, leadership skills, and national unity. Furthermore, he noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces intend to initiate recruitment drives to help talented young sports figures build professional careers within the military.
To mark his commitment to the development of youth sports, NBA athlete Precious Achiuwa presented a signed basketball to the minister on behalf of the event organizers.
