A massive Russian aerial campaign involving 115 drones and 24 ballistic missiles has left 21 people dead and scores wounded across Ukraine. While Ukrainian forces managed to neutralize the majority of the incoming drones, their strained air defense systems failed to intercept any of the ballistic projectiles. The attack devastated critical infrastructure, including logistics centers and a railway station near Kyiv.
For local residents like Anastasiia Dudley, the assault was a harrowing experience. Her home was significantly damaged after being struck by a drone, leaving the structure unstable and devoid of its upper floor. She described the event as the most terrifying night she has endured since the conflict began in 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has directly attributed the rising death toll to the current scarcity of Patriot interceptor missiles. Despite having the Patriot systems in place, Ukraine lacks the necessary ammunition to utilize them effectively. Military analyst Ivan Stupak compared the situation to owning a high-performance vehicle without fuel, noting that the systems are now vulnerable to being targeted by Russian forces.
The diplomatic push to secure more interceptors continues, with President Zelensky engaging with international partners, including NATO leader Mark Rutte. However, the United States remains hesitant to increase its supply, leaving large portions of Ukrainian territory exposed to Russian missile barrages.
