Court Orders 15 Strokes of Cane for Driver Who Assaulted Policeman in Kaduna
A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna on Thursday sentenced a 36-year-old driver, Mustapha Aminu, to 15 strokes of the cane for assaulting a police officer on duty.
The convict, a resident of Ungwan Sanusi, Kaduna, was found guilty of striking Sergeant Adamu Maigari on the head with a log of wood.
Aminu pleaded guilty to the charge.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel, who delivered the ruling, stated that the punishment was meant to ensure the convict grasped the seriousness of his actions.
“This will also serve as a warning to others who may consider committing such crimes. I hereby order a court official to administer 15 strokes of the cane,” he ruled.
Emmanuel cautioned Aminu against repeating such actions and urged him to focus on his work to become a responsible member of society.
Earlier, Prosecutor Inspector Chidi Leo informed the court that on January 29, around 2 p.m., Aminu attacked and injured a police officer who was carrying out his duty.
Leo explained that Aminu had been driving recklessly, and when the officer attempted to stop him, he responded by striking the officer with a log of wood.
The prosecutor noted that the offence violated Section 237 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
