A group of twenty-five US states filed a lawsuit on Monday challenging the Trump administration’s implementation of tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on products from 60 different trading partners. These measures, which began in July, specifically target nations including China, the UK, and members of the European Union, citing concerns over how these countries handle forced labour issues.
In a legal filing, the coalition of Democratic states characterized the trade policy as arbitrary and unlawful. However, White House representative Kush Desai defended the move, stating the administration is exercising its legal authority to protect domestic businesses from unfair practices. Desai insisted that foreign nations must do more to eliminate the importation of goods made with forced labour.
According to the Office of the US Trade Representative, these duties impact nearly all US imports. New York Governor Kathy Hochul strongly criticized the policy, describing it as an unfair financial burden on American families. She referenced past legal defeats for the president, noting that the Supreme Court previously invalidated similar broad tariffs, which led to significant financial refunds for impacted companies. Despite these legal hurdles, President Trump maintains that such measures are essential for strengthening the national economy and protecting domestic employment.
