Chelsea secures Atalanta defender Marco Palestra on seven-year contract

Chelsea has signed Atalanta defender Marco Palestra to a seven-year contract, marking the first addition for new manager Xabi Alonso.

Premier League side Chelsea has completed the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta, securing the player on a seven-year agreement. While the club did not release specific financial terms, reports indicate the transfer cost is approximately 43 million pounds, potentially increasing to 47 million pounds with performance-related bonuses.

Palestra, 21, arrives as the inaugural signing for new manager Xabi Alonso, who officially began his tenure at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. The move comes despite speculation that the defender was close to signing with Inter Milan before Chelsea submitted an improved proposal.

Recognized as the 2025/26 Serie A Defender of the Year, Palestra spent the previous season on loan at Cagliari, demonstrating his versatility as both a full-back and wing-back. He has also represented Italy, earning his first senior cap during the nation’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

Chelsea is currently restructuring its defensive line after a lackluster previous season. With Marc Cucurella departing for Real Madrid, the club is reportedly monitoring Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix to further bolster its defensive options under Alonso.
