Can the original Love Island UK learn from its American cousin?

With Love Island UK viewership shifting toward streaming and some fans calling for a format refresh, industry experts and viewers are looking at the successful US edition for potential inspiration.

Following the conclusion of the 13th season of Love Island UK, which saw Julia Majchrzak and Lorenzo Alessi emerge as winners, discussions have surfaced regarding the show’s future. While the series remains a major draw for younger demographics, linear viewership numbers have declined significantly compared to the 2019 peak.

Conversely, the American iteration has gained substantial momentum, frequently topping streaming charts in the US. The stateside version has effectively integrated celebrity culture, featuring endorsements from high-profile figures such as Megan Thee Stallion, Lizzo, and Demi Lovato. This surge in popularity has led some commentators to question if the original UK production needs a strategic refresh.

Critics, including popular content creator Sarel and superfan Dami Amoo, argue that the UK version has become overproduced and currently lacks authentic romantic connections. Sarel noted that the absence of genuine chemistry between participants makes it difficult for viewers to invest in the couples. Meanwhile, Amoo suggested that the production feels stagnant compared to the US version, which benefits from greater financial investment, elaborate set designs, and more engaging activities.

Aaron Evans, a former contestant on the US show and winner of The Traitors UK, attributes the success of the American edition to its fresh format and massive social media presence. Industry observers point out that the US production team actively seeks ways to boost engagement through interactive challenges and tighter ties to digital culture.

In response to these critiques, an ITV spokesperson maintained that fan feedback remains central to the show’s development. They highlighted that Love Island UK continues to be a dominant force in commercial television, boasting over two billion streams on their digital platform, ITVX, and retaining significant cultural influence.
