Robert Bush, a former funeral director, is attending a week-long sentencing hearing at Hull Crown Court after admitting to 67 criminal charges. These include 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial, as well as theft and fraud.
Prosecutors described the conditions at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors as horrific. Following a tip-off in March 2024, police raided the facility and discovered 31 bodies that should have been cremated months prior. This included a stillborn infant kept for nearly two years. Additionally, authorities located over 100 sets of ashes at the site.
Prosecutor Chris Paxton told the court that Bush managed the business with a profound lack of care, mistreating families on an industrial scale. Investigations revealed that Bush had committed various offenses over a 12-year period. In some cases, he provided false remains to grieving mothers, claiming them to be the ashes of their unborn children.
Families affected by these actions, including Jasmine Beverley, have expressed deep distress and are now pushing for stricter government oversight of the funeral industry. The court is currently hearing impact statements from over 100 victims.
