Aziz Abdul, the Ugandan boxer and grandson of former dictator Idi Amin, faced disqualification from the Commonwealth Games following a headbutt incident against English competitor Damar Thomas. The 25-year-old athlete was disqualified in the third round after making contact with Thomas’ chin during a clinch.
Following the bout, Abdul claimed the officiating was biased against him due to his heritage. He asserted that the judges ignored fouls committed by English fighters while penalizing him unfairly. Before the match, Abdul had expressed a desire to be known as the new ‘King of Scotland,’ a title his grandfather infamously claimed in 1976. Despite the controversy, Thomas expressed dissatisfaction with the nature of his victory, noting that he would focus on his upcoming performance instead.
