A massive wildfire in France’s Gironde region has reached within 15 kilometers of Bordeaux, prompting local authorities to prepare for possible mass evacuations. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez described the situation as unprecedented, noting that the flames seem to behave unpredictably. Thomas Cazenave, a representative in the area, confirmed that they are establishing capacity to house residents should conditions worsen.
The scale of the destruction is severe, with mayors like Jerome Steffe of Cestas labeling the event the fire of the century. Across the region, 42,000 hectares have been scorched and 240 homes reduced to rubble. Emergency crews are working tirelessly to construct firebreaks, yet the risk persists due to shifting winds and floating embers.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu reported that over 116,000 hectares have burned this year, with nearly all incidents linked to human activity. Authorities have made 162 arrests since early July related to intentionally started fires. Meanwhile, in neighboring Spain, a state of emergency remains in effect as blazes near Madrid have consumed over 27,000 hectares. Experts continue to point toward climate change as a major factor intensifying these heatwaves and wildfires across Europe.
