In a discussion with The Punch, the Dutch strategist expressed frustration that three decades have passed without recognition, noting that while squad members were granted national honors, homes, and financial gifts, he was excluded.
Bonfrere highlighted a significant grievance regarding his personal Olympic gold medal, which he reports was taken from him under mysterious circumstances. Now 80 years old, he recalled being blocked by an official from joining his players during a ceremony, which resulted in the loss of his medal. Despite his repeated efforts to contact authorities to resolve this matter, he claims his inquiries have been ignored. The coach was the mastermind behind a legendary team featuring players like Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha, who memorably defeated Brazil and Argentina to claim the top prize in 1996.
