The ownership group behind AFC Bournemouth, known as Black Knight Rugby and a subsidiary of Cannae Holdings, has finished its acquisition of the Exeter Chiefs. This marks the first instance of a United States entity gaining control over an English top-tier rugby team. Sources indicate the transaction for the recent Premiership finalists carries a valuation of approximately £25 million.
Previously held by club members, the two-time Premiership titleholders and 2020 European Champions Cup winners moved forward with the sale following a successful member vote last month. For Black Knight, this represents their entry into rugby, adding to their existing portfolio which includes French football side FC Lorient and the ownership of Auckland FC.
Exeter joins a growing list of Premiership clubs receiving significant external investment. Recent examples include Red Bull’s acquisition of Newcastle last August and James Dyson purchasing a 50% interest in Bath.
