Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has revealed his administration’s intention to shutter various camps for Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) as regional security conditions continue to stabilize. This announcement occurred during a session with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team, headed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
The governor attributed the improved security landscape to federal assistance, which has allowed displaced residents to return to their ancestral homes and resume agricultural work. With active monitoring from local security agencies, traditional leaders, and residents, the government has observed a voluntary exodus from the 15 original camps established during past periods of conflict.
To ensure these families remain in their communities permanently, the administration is partnering with organizations like the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration. This effort aims to foster long-term stability rather than temporary relocation. Beyond security, the governor discussed broad infrastructure improvements, including a state of emergency on road projects, the rehabilitation of neglected primary schools, and the recruitment of 9,700 new educators.
Healthcare has also seen significant upgrades, with the state teaching hospital now drawing patients from surrounding regions due to improved facilities and specialized care. Looking ahead, Governor Alia emphasized that his government remains committed to translating campaign promises into tangible results, while Onanuga praised the administration’s efforts to revive state-owned industries and settle outstanding salary obligations.
