Former England Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his ambition to coach the national cricket team once his playing career ends. Currently pursuing his level three coaching certification, Stokes intends to remain involved in the sport in a leadership capacity. Despite his sudden retirement from international play in June, the 35-year-old all-rounder confirmed he has no intentions of returning to the field.
Stokes also discussed the recent leadership shift within the squad. While he previously supported Harry Brook to succeed him, England has appointed Joe Root to the position permanently. Stokes voiced slight confusion over the decision to bypass Brook, who served as his vice-captain, noting that such moves might send mixed signals to younger players. Regardless, he offered his full support to Root, who will serve under new head coach Stephen Fleming.
Reflecting on Root’s previous tenure as captain, which concluded in 2022 due to the significant mental and physical strain of the job, Stokes admitted he holds concerns for his teammate. He emphasized his hope that Root finds success and enjoyment in the role this time around while prioritizing his own well-being.
