Bayo Onanuga Clarifies President Tinubu’s Stance on Power Sector Goals and Re-election

Presidential aide Bayo Onanuga clarifies that President Tinubu never committed to skipping his re-election bid due to electricity supply challenges, describing earlier reports as contextual errors.

Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for the President, has refuted reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu vowed to quit his re-election ambitions if he did not fix Nigeria’s power grid. During an appearance on Arise News, Onanuga clarified that remarks made by Tinubu in 2022 were misinterpreted.

Onanuga emphasized that the President’s past comments were not a formal pledge to step down. He pointed to the Electricity Act as a key reform initiated by the administration, noting that it empowers states to manage their own power generation, transmission, and distribution. Further government measures include ramping up meter distribution to curb issues with estimated billing.

While acknowledging that the current state of electricity supply remains short of official goals, Onanuga blamed systemic hurdles such as aging infrastructure, financial debts to suppliers, and recurring gas shortages. He reaffirmed that the administration is actively working to resolve these obstacles to boost nationwide power delivery.
