Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, confirmed that the crew and pilot of a private plane that recently landed on a road in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, remain under investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS). The findings from this inquiry will be presented to the President once concluded.
Addressing concerns regarding airspace safety on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Keyamo noted that Nigeria’s aviation safety record remains strong. He cited a record 91.4 per cent score in recent International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) audits, the highest for the nation since 1960. Regarding the unscheduled landing, he characterized the event as a significant security breach currently undergoing intense scrutiny.
Keyamo also announced a collaborative Public-Private Partnership with the Lagos State government to construct a superhighway. This new road will bypass Iyana Ipaja, extending behind the Murtala Muhammed Airport to connect with Mafoluku, effectively opening up the swampy area for development.
Regarding the financial health of domestic carriers, the Minister addressed the substantial debts owed to aviation agencies, noting that one airline alone carries a liability of N14 billion. He confirmed that while the government acknowledges the struggles of these operators, a structured repayment plan has been initiated, with several airlines recently committing 10 per cent of their outstanding balances.
