At Least 30 Presumed Dead Following Jigawa Canoe Accident

A canoe carrying about 40 passengers capsized in Jigawa State, with at least 30 people feared dead and search operations currently in progress.

A tragic incident has occurred in Ringim Local Government Area, Jigawa State, where a canoe carrying approximately 40 passengers overturned. Local witnesses report that the boat, which was transporting mostly women and children, capsized near Malamawar Yandutse village on Sunday evening.

Search and rescue efforts are currently underway. Families of the passengers have been instructed to arrive at the scene to identify recovered bodies. Muhammad Bala Sanusi, the Director of Planning at the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), verified the occurrence but noted that authorities are still working to determine the total number of survivors and fatalities. The specific cause of the capsizing remains unknown at this time.

Malam Habibu Dauda, the head of the Emergency Management Committee, corroborated the reports. He urged the community to maintain composure and cautioned against circulating unconfirmed details while responders continue their work.
