Arsenal suffered a narrow 3–2 loss to Villarreal in their latest pre-season fixture, though the performance offered several positives for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The game marked a debut start for new signing Viktor Gyokeres, who joined from Sporting CP in a high-profile transfer. However, the Swedish forward was unable to open his scoring account.
Former Arsenal player Nicolas Pepe played a key role in the opener, with his shot possibly deflecting off teammate Karl Etta Eyong before finding the back of the net. Shortly after, Bukayo Saka nearly equalised with a trademark cut inside, but Luiz Junior denied him with a sharp save.
Eyong later capitalised on a rebound after David Raya made a strong initial stop, putting Villarreal 2–0 ahead. Arsenal responded through Christian Norgaard, who pulled one back before halftime, though the visitors still went into the break with the lead.
Manager Mikel Arteta made several adjustments at the interval, including replacing Norgaard with Martin Zubimendi, and introducing Cristhian Mosquera in place of Ben White.
However, a wave of second-half substitutions seemed to hinder Arsenal’s rhythm. Villarreal extended their lead once again through Arnaut Danjuma. Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard later converted a penalty to reduce the gap, but the Gunners couldn’t find a late equaliser—despite continued attacking intent, particularly from Dowman, who remains a standout performer this pre-season.
