Activist Aisha Yesufu has urged Nigeria’s opposition political factions to consolidate their efforts behind Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, for the upcoming 2027 general elections. In a post on X this Wednesday, Yesufu clarified that this collaboration does not require parties to sacrifice their independent identities.
Yesufu argued that victory in 2027 will go to the group that builds the most effective coalition, rather than the one with the most vocal followers. She emphasized that Obi possesses a proven track record, making him the strongest option for a united front. She highlighted that President Bola Tinubu secured his 2023 victory with only 36 percent of the vote, implying that a combined opposition holds the numerical advantage.
The BringBackOurGirls Movement co-convener expressed regret over the current fragmentation within opposition ranks. She stated that working together is a tactical necessity rather than a sign of weakness. She invited party organizers, fundraisers, and strategists to join a unified coordination channel designed to synchronize their ongoing efforts. She maintains that the opposition must find a common purpose to effectively compete in the next election cycle.
