Public backlash has intensified following revelations that the federal government designated approximately N8.05 billion for religious projects in the 2026 budget. Data from the accountability group Tracka shows that N1.91 billion was set aside for church projects, while mosques were allocated N6.14 billion.
Atiku Abubakar, the ADC presidential candidate, recently criticized the Bola Tinubu administration for prioritizing these religious expenditures during a time of widespread economic hardship. Echoing this frustration, NDC leader Aisha Yesufu argued that taxpayer funds should be directed toward essential services like education rather than religious institutions. She questioned the government’s involvement in religious affairs, describing the policy as a sign of unserious governance.
Meanwhile, Arise TV presenter Rufai Oseni accused federal lawmakers of using these budget line items as a vehicle for corruption. He highlighted specific regional allocations, such as projects in Bende and Zaria, as evidence of potential embezzlement by legislators, labeling the current budget process fraudulent.
