Twenty-six-year-old Sharif Ahmadzai is set to appear before an Athens court this Wednesday following his arrest. Authorities detained the Afghan national regarding the death of 38-year-old Scottish resident Elisabeth Jane Ross. Her remains were discovered inside a suitcase within a vacant building in the Kypseli neighborhood on July 18, shortly after she had been reported as missing.
Ahmadzai, an accomplished boxer and refugee, arrived in Greece after fleeing his home country as a teenager. Reports indicate he experienced significant personal tragedy, having lost his father in combat and his mother and siblings to a suicide bombing in Kabul. After travelling through Iran and Turkey, he resided in a Lesbos refugee camp, where he later married and established a charitable organization called Love Every Nation Athens. Investigators believe Ross, who arrived in Greece in late June, became acquainted with him through this charity.
Greek police allege that the suspect transported the victim’s remains to the abandoned site using a suitcase and subsequently utilized her bank cards for illicit withdrawals. During a search of his property, officers confiscated a blade and a toy gun. Currently, investigators are waiting for a toxicology report to determine the exact cause of death and are actively searching for individuals Ross intended to meet before her disappearance.
