The Grassroots Mobilisation Network (GMN), which supports the African Democratic Congress (ADC), recently requested that Nigerians dismiss divisive comments reportedly made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir. Secretary-General Usman Bala Idris stated that the northern region requires effective leadership and equity instead of political agendas fueled by religion.
This response was triggered by statements attributed to Jingir in Kano regarding Nigeria’s religious landscape. The GMN clarified that these remarks reflect personal opinions rather than the collective view of Islam. The group emphasized that Islamic teachings advocate for fairness and the protection of civil rights for all citizens regardless of their background.
Idris also spoke out against the practice of same-faith presidential tickets, characterizing such strategies as detrimental to national unity. He reminded the public that Nigeria’s diverse population has lived in harmony for generations and warned against allowing political figures to manipulate faith for personal gain.
The organization encourages voters to evaluate candidates based on their competence and track record rather than their religious affiliation. Idris noted that the north desires leaders who prioritize justice, economic stability, and security. Finally, the group called on the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs to actively promote peace and discourage inflammatory speech among religious leaders.
