The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has successfully dismantled an illegal operation responsible for manufacturing and distributing counterfeit diplomatic and government license plates. These fraudulent items were primarily utilized by criminals to bypass security protocols and gain entry into restricted areas.
Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi announced the breakthrough during a press conference in Abuja on Friday. He explained that a targeted investigation began soon after he took office, prompted by widespread reports of unauthorized individuals exploiting official-looking plates. Sanusi noted that these criminals paid between ₦500,000 and ₦1.7 million to acquire the plates, indicating a calculated effort to facilitate illicit activities.
While several suspects are currently in police custody, authorities have also identified the external manufacturers operating outside the FCT. Sanusi confirmed that police are tracking these individuals and keeping details confidential to avoid compromising the ongoing investigation. He encouraged the public to report any vehicles displaying suspicious diplomatic markings, as these are often used to deceive guards at ministries and government agencies.
In a related enforcement effort, the police command recovered significant amounts of stolen public infrastructure, including solar street lights, drainage covers, and armored cables. Commissioner Sanusi classified these acts as economic sabotage and issued a stern warning to scrap dealers and receivers of stolen goods that the police are working to dismantle the entire chain of supply for stolen government assets.
